Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake Preview Roundup
What people who actually sat with a build said, before review scores exist.
There is no review score yet because there is no retail build yet. There is a week of hands-on coverage from gamescom 2026. This page is a map of that coverage: what each piece is good for, where they agree, and where they are just vibes. The video on this page is a veteran player sitting with the remake for a long session; use it as a feel check, not as a patch note.
Written hands-on
IGN (Imran Khan). Best single sentence: a true visual remake that leaves gameplay relatively untouched. Best specific: the town screen is finally readable, and original maps (Arrogance among them) are reconstructed from their data. Use IGN when you want the “is it still Heroes III?” answer in one sitting.
Rock Paper Shotgun (Julian Benson). Best specifics: three-mission prelude, build queue, mass recruiting, hero arrival clips, and the Alt range overlay that the author used constantly. Also the reminder that you still walk a hero home to recruit. Use RPS when you want quality-of-life named as a list instead of as marketing.
Dualshockers. Best extras: original-team involvement, map and campaign editors at launch, mod.io, and a twenty-minute intro mission that really did teach the whole loop. Use Dualshockers when you care about UGC more than about lighting.
Geek Culture. Named The Queen’s Departure as a prologue section and described a two-hour session that included a free-play Arrogance reconstruction against three AI opponents. Use this when you want session length and structure.
Eurogamer and others mostly relayed the press list plus the IGN line. They are useful as confirmation, not as extra facts.
What the previews agree on
- The ruleset is trying to be the 1999 ruleset.
- The camera and town UI are the real new muscles.
- Expansions and nine factions are in the box.
- Community maps are a launch pillar, not a later promise in the marketing.
- Unit art and music are the cultural fault lines, not the skill wheel.
That agreement is why this wiki’s how to play page teaches original systems, and why remake versus original is a checklist instead of a theory essay.
What previews cannot tell you yet
Balance patches. Final PC spec. Price. A month inside 2027. Whether the most famous HotA maps convert. Whether ranked matchmaking exists. Whether Romero’s themes return as the default soundtrack. Anyone who claims those answers from a two-hour preview is guessing. Our release page and map editor page keep those as open questions on purpose.
How to watch long footage
Long sessions are good for camera language, overlay use, and whether a Castle town still feels like a Castle town. They are bad for speedrunning a review. Watch a siege, watch a Monday recruit, watch someone forget a second hero. If those moments feel like the game you remember, the remake is doing the job the announcement described. If they do not, you may want the 1999 Complete Edition plus mods, which the edition comparison already suggested as a parallel track.
When scored reviews exist in 2027, this page will add them as a dated section and will not delete the preview notes. Previews are how the conversation started. They are not how it should end.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for new commanders and returning veterans.
Is there a review score?
Not for a 2027 game that is still in the announcement window. These are previews.
Which preview should I read first?
IGN for the thesis, Rock Paper Shotgun for the quality-of-life list. Then watch a long session if you care about feel.
Do previews contradict Ubisoft?
Not on the feature list. They add texture: overlay, queues, specific map names. If that ever conflicts with a later blog, the blog wins.
