Heroes in Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake

How classes, specialties, and a second hero slot actually decide maps.

Heroes Guide

In this series the word “hero” is not flavour. It is a character with primary stats, a secondary skill list, a spell book, artifact slots, and an army. Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake keeps that RPG layer. This page is how to hire, how to specialise, and how to stop asking one champion to flag every mine on the continent.

Primary stats

Attack and Defense modify every stack in the army. Spell Power makes damage and some durations hit harder. Knowledge is the mana pool. Classes bias level-up rolls: Knights lean into the martial pair, Wizards into the magic pair, and the hybrid classes sit in between. A Warlock with high Power is a different weapon from an Overlord with high Attack even when both ride a Dungeon army. Do not fight that bias. Pick the hero whose rolls match the plan.

Secondary skills are the build

You will not get every skill. The wheel is a series of forks. The hero tier list ranks those forks. The short version for this roster page: Logistics on anyone who walks, Earth Magic and Wisdom on the spell carrier, the faction engine (Necromancy, or Offense, or Armorer) on the fighter, Estates on the mule. A hero with four filler skills is a walking artifact rack, which is still useful, but it is not a main.

Specialties worth remembering

Creature specialties add extra growth or extra stats to one unit. If you build that unit, the specialty is a building you did not pay for. If you never build it, the specialty is flavour. Spell specialties (Chain Lightning, Resurrection, Inferno) want a guild that can actually cast the spell. Skill specialties (Offense, Estates, Eagle Eye) want you to take the matching skill. Campaign-famous names — Catherine, Gelu, Crag Hack, Sandro, Solmyr — are famous because their specialties match a script. On a random map, the tavern might hand you someone quieter who is still the correct Logistics start.

The remake’s new cinematics will sell the famous names harder. That is good for onboarding and bad if you refuse to hire a no-name mule. Hire the mule.

The second hero is not optional

Day one, buy a second hero if gold allows. Give them a cheap stack, send them to a second mine, and use them to ferry creatures from town so the main army does not walk home every Monday. A third hero becomes a scout who sits in fog and watches enemy movement. This is the same advice as the beginner guide, repeated here because roster pages are where people forget logistics and start collecting portraits.

In multiplayer, the mule is how you keep simultaneous turns honest: someone is always still moving. In campaigns, a tagged hero might be required next map; do not let them die for a pile of sulfur unless the briefing says they are expendable.

Tavern discipline

The tavern refreshes. Gold spent rerolling is gold not spent on a Griffin Tower. Reroll when the offered heroes are all wrong for the town and you have time. Do not reroll when a scenario timer is eating the map. If the tavern offers an enemy-aligned class, remember that some heroes can still lead your army with a morale penalty. Sometimes the Logistics start is worth the penalty. Sometimes it is not. That call is why this game is an RPG and a strategy game at once.

When the hero is hired, dress them from the artifact guide and fight using the combat guide. A named portrait without movement skill is still going to arrive late to the only fight that mattered.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for new commanders and returning veterans.

Should I restart until I see a famous hero?

In a slow random, you can be picky. In a campaign, play the hero the script gave you. Famous names are not automatically the best Logistics start.

Can heroes of another faction lead my army?

Yes, with morale consequences if the creatures dislike the commander. Mules care less. Mains care more.

Do I need a spellcaster?

On most maps, yes, even a modest one. Wisdom plus a level-three guild already changes which fights you take.
