Nine Factions in Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake
Castle through Conflux: what each town builds, spends, and punishes.
The remake’s announcement named nine factions and promised them all on day one. That sentence is the difference between this project and the 2015 HD Edition. Below is a field guide, not a ranking. For letters, use the faction tier list. For units, use the creature list.
Castle — Erathia’s honest army
Humans, griffins, cavaliers, angels. Resource diet is gold-heavy and simple. Knights and Clerics split the physical and magical viewpoints. Unique buildings include the Brotherhood of the Sword and the Portal of Glory. Castle is where the beginner guide wants you if you have no preference: shooters early, flyers in the middle, angels if the map lasts. It does not snowball for free. It also does not collapse if you miss one gem mine.
Rampart — forest tempo
Elves, dwarves, pegasi, unicorns, gold dragons. Rangers and Druids. Rampart likes wood, gems, and maps with trees. Diplomacy is a frequent guest. Grand Elves are the week-one argument; Unicorns are the week-three argument; Gold Dragons are the reason you did not sell the gem pit. If the generator gives you desert, you will feel poor. If it gives you forest, you will feel chosen.
Tower — walls of math
Gremlins, gargoyles, golems, nagas, giants, titans. Wizards and Alchemists. Tower eats gold and crystal and time. Golems do not panic. Titans end games. The Skyship and Library are the unique toys. Tower is slow to the first fight and rude in the last one. New players who build the Mage Guild and forget the golem wall will die to a faster army they could have stalled.
Inferno — corpses into demons
Imps, gogs, hell hounds, demons, pit fiends, efreet, devils. Demoniacs and Heretics. The Pit Lord conversion trick is the identity. Sulfur and a stomach for messy fights are the cost. Inferno wants you to take battles the combat guide would tell a Castle player to skip, because the graveyard is a building material. Miss the unique buildings and you are just a red Castle with worse angels.
Necropolis — the second economy
Walking dead, wights, vampires, liches, dragons of bone. Death Knights and Necromancers. Skeletons from the dead are the engine. A second hero exists to ghost stacks home. Liches siege. Vampire Lords refuse to end a fight. Necropolis is fragile until the pile is real, then it is a logistics problem for everyone else. If you play it like Castle, you will wonder where the gold went. Play it like a factory.
Dungeon — the cap of the game
Troglodytes, harpies, evil eyes, medusas, minotaurs, manticores, red and black dragons. Overlords and Warlocks. Sulfur again. Magogs for sieges. Black Dragons for “your spells do not work.” Dungeon is the town people ban on tiny templates and the town people pick when they want the highest ceiling. Mana Vortex and the Portal of Summoning are the unique headlines. Scout sulfur before you promise a friend you will “just play something chill.”
Stronghold — the attack bar
Goblins, wolf riders, orcs, ogres, rocs, cyclopes, behemoths. Barbarians and Battle Mages. Stronghold wants Attack specialties and a straight line to Behemoths. It is readable. It is slightly under-armed against magic. Cyclops siege shots are the surprise tool. If you like hitting things and you learned the game on Castle, Stronghold will feel like a louder cousin.
Fortress — swamp grit
Gnolls, lizardmen, serpent flies, basilisks, gorgons, wyverns, hydras. Beastmasters and Witches. Hydras are the jewel. The rest is a mid-tier grind that becomes excellent on swamp maps and stubborn on grass. Fortress punishes people who only memorised dragon towns. It rewards people who read speed and hex occupancy. If your lobby laughs when you pick it, make them walk into a Hydra.
Conflux — the ninth voice
Pixies, air/water/fire/earth elementals, energy elementals, magic elementals, phoenixes. Planeswalkers and Elementalists. This is the Armageddon’s Blade town, absent from HD Edition, present here. Magic is the culture. Phoenixes are the headline. Gems matter. If you skip Resistance on other factions, Conflux will explain why. Campaign players meet it properly in the Blade act; random players can first-pick it on day one of a 2027 skirmish, which is new for anyone who grew up on Restoration-only discs.
When you have picked a town, hire according to the heroes page and do not ignore the artifact guide. Town identity is the start of a plan, not the plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for new commanders and returning veterans.
Which faction is best for a first campaign?
Castle, then Rampart. The remake's prologue may hand you a viewpoint; play that town, then learn the others on random maps.
Why do some towns need sulfur?
Dungeon and Inferno (and parts of other trees) sit on rare resources so their top units are not free. Flag the matching mine or accept a slower tier-7.
Is Cove in this remake?
No. Cove is a later fan town. This remake is the original nine.
