Artifacts in Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake
Which relics change a map, and which ones are just a prettier helmet.
Artifacts are the third economy, after mines and weekly growth. Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake has not published a new relic table. Until it does, the original slots and combination sets are the working list. This page is not a full database. It is a decision guide: when to detour, when to ignore a guarded pile, and which names still deserve a place in your head.
Slots and why they fill up
A hero wears a helm, cape, necklace, weapon, shield, torso, two rings, feet, and a handful of miscellaneous slots depending on the exact table. Relics occupy the same slots as junk. That is the whole game. Putting a mediocre plus-one weapon in the hand that wanted Armageddon’s Blade (the campaign object, not the expansion name) is how you fail a seer quest. Keep a mule with empty slots so you can ferry a relic to the hero who can actually use it. The heroes page is that ferry service.
Relics that rewrite plans
Angel Wings / Spellbinder’s Hat / Tome of… — movement and spell access. A hero who can Fly or who suddenly owns a library of spells is a different class. Cloak of the Undead King — Necropolis players will ruin a map with this. Statue of Legion pieces — extra creature growth in towns, which is to say extra Mondays. Orb of Vulnerability — the anti-dragon, anti-golem joke that stops being a joke when Black Dragons were your only plan. Vial of Dragon Blood and other immunities — read the text. Immunities are how fights become free or become impossible.
Combination artifacts (the assembled super-items from parts) are campaign punchlines and random-map lotteries. If you find two parts, it can be correct to hunt the third. If you find one part, it is usually incorrect to spend a week on a scavenger hunt while an enemy takes your second town.
Majors, minors, and the honest detour
A major artifact with Attack and Defense is worth a fight you would otherwise skip. A treasure chest is worth a small stack. A minor ring of plus-one knowledge is not worth a pack of Thunderbirds. The combat guide is the calculator. This page only adds: the 3D camera will make every sparkle look important. It is not. Flag the sawmill first.
Scholar artifacts that teach spells are better than they look if your main has Wisdom and a hole in the book. Gold artifacts that only add income are better on a mule with Estates than on a fighter. Boots that add movement are Logistics in item form; they go on whoever walks the most tiles, which is often not the hero with the prettiest specialty.
Campaign warnings
Shadow of Death is a story about assembling cursed objects. If you are following the campaign walkthrough, obey the briefing. Picking up the wrong relic can be the mission. Selling it can be the fail state. Restoration of Erathia is more honest: artifacts are power-ups, not plot bombs, with a few scripted exceptions. Armageddon’s Blade has a title object that is not a random drop you vendor in the artifact merchant.
The remake’s new cinematics may spotlight relics more than the 1999 text boxes did. Enjoy that. Still read the item card before you wear a cursed combination piece into a fight you needed to win.
Merchants, Seer’s Huts, and trading
Artifact merchants in some towns buy and sell. Seer’s Huts request a specific item for a reward that can be a relic, a town, or a win condition. If a hut named an item you have not seen, mark it and stop selling junk blindly. Marketplace trades for resources are not artifacts, but they are how you convert a spare sulfur into the gold that buys the hero who wears the relic.
When you are ranking whether a relic is “fair,” you are already in tier list territory. When you are ranking whether you should fight the guard, you are in combat territory. This page’s job is to make sure you do not treat every glow on the adventure map as equal. They are not. Some of them are extra Mondays. Some of them are hats.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for new commanders and returning veterans.
Should I fight every artifact guard?
No. Fight the ones that sit on movement items, spell access, or extra growth. Skip vanity hats until your army is bored.
Do combination artifacts work in the remake?
They should, if the ruleset is faithful. We will confirm the assembly UI after a public build shows the backpack.
Who should wear movement boots?
The hero who walks the most tiles, often the mule or the Logistics main. Not automatically the highest-level fighter.
