Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake Heroes III Remake vs the Original
A true visual rebuild that is trying very hard not to be a new strategy game.
IGN called Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake a top-to-bottom visual remake that leaves gameplay relatively untouched. Rock Paper Shotgun, Dualshockers, and RPG Site said the same in different dialects: almost one-for-one rules, new presentation, selected quality-of-life. This page is the checklist so you can argue with specifics instead of with a vibe.
What is actually new
Presentation. Snowdrop 3D instead of fixed 2D isometric sprites. Free camera. 4K. Weather. Seasons. Rebuilt towns and battlefields. New creature and hero models — the part of the internet currently on fire. New cinematics. Modern audio with voice and extra cues.
Interface. A town screen that is easier to parse than the original’s stacked windows. A build queue — Plan Mode, or a building Wishlist in Ubisoft’s overview — so you stop skipping construction by accident. Details on the town building guide. Mass recruiting. Hero arrival flavour when you enter a town. A strategic zoomed-out adventure-map view. An Alt-held overlay for movement and shooting range in combat. Smoother information displays, per Ubisoft’s blog.
Structure. A three-mission prologue. Campaigns from the original and both expansions presented as one saga. An epilogue. Editors and a UGC hub at launch. Original map import. mod.io. Online matchmaking and simultaneous turns around an eight-player cap. Hot Seat kept.
Platforms. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series sit beside PC. The 1999 original did not have this console plan. HD Edition’s console life was a different, smaller product.
What is supposed to stay
The three pillars: adventure map, town management, hex combat. One building per day. Weekly creature growth. Movement points. Morale and luck. Secondary skills. Artifact slots. Nine factions with the same identities. Random map generator. The campaign scripts, even when they were unfair. RPS noted you still have to walk a hero home to recruit, which is the kind of friction fans secretly wanted kept.
If a friend tells you the remake is “auto-battler now” or “real-time,” they watched a camera pan. Read how to play.
HD Edition is not this remake
The 2015 HD Edition raised resolution, added a controversial online layer, and omitted both expansions. Community consensus for years was to play Complete Edition on GOG with HD mods instead. The remake’s entire political pitch is to do the job HD Edition did not: complete content, modern UI, a client that can last. That is also why Ubisoft listed the 1999 Complete Edition on Steam at the same moment — a parallel track, not a beta.
The fights that are not about rules
Unit silhouettes, animation weight, and music are the live cultural fights. Some players will not care if Logistics still exists if the Griffin no longer looks like their Griffin. That is a real opinion and not a patch note. This wiki will keep rules on the tier and faction pages, and keep art opinions in the reviews roundup. If Ubisoft passes the models again before 2027, the comparison will shrink. If they do not, this page will still say the rules were the easy part.
Olden Era is the other comparison people force. It is a new Heroes with new factions, not a remake. Ubisoft has said both projects came from the same 2022 decision to reinvest. You can wishlist both. You cannot substitute both. Use the edition comparison when a store page title is too similar to read at 1 a.m.
The video on this page is a hands-on look at how the classic loop feels in the new client. Watch it for the overlay and the town screen. Then decide whether “untouched gameplay” is what you wanted, or whether you wanted a new game after all.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for new commanders and returning veterans.
Is this a remaster or a remake?
Ubisoft and preview outlets treat it as a remake: new 3D client, same rules. HD Edition was the remaster-shaped product.
Did they change combat math?
No published table says so. The new overlay shows the old ranges more clearly.
Will original maps look 3D?
That is the conversion pitch. Famous templates are being reconstructed from their data. See the map editor page.
