Faction Tier List

Nine factions ship on day one of Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake: Castle, Rampart, Tower, Inferno, Necropolis, Dungeon, Stronghold, Fortress, and Conflux. That is the complete original plus Armageddon’s Blade. This list ranks them for uncoordinated random maps against humans, then notes where campaigns and weird templates flip the order. Identities live on the faction overview; this page is the argument about power.

S — Dungeon, Necropolis, Conflux

Dungeon is the dragon town. Minotaurs hold the mid-game, Magogs chip walls, and Black Dragons ignore magic and end games. Overlords and Warlocks want Power or Attack depending on whether you spell or you smash. On small maps Dungeon is a ban candidate because the cap is so high. On large maps it still wins if it finds sulfur and a second town.

Necropolis converts every fight into more skeletons. A competent Necromancer with Expert Necromancy and a ghosting mule will have a stack the economy did not pay for. Vampires sustain. Liches siege. Bone and Ghost Dragons close. The weakness is early fragility and a town that wants black resource tiles. Humans who let you farm neutrals have already lost.

Conflux is the expansion town that plays like a loaded spellbook with Phoenixes on top. Magic Elementals and the magic-heavy tree punish players who skipped Resistance and who left gems on the ground. On templates with rich magic hexes it can feel unfair. On resource-starved grass it is merely excellent.

A — Tower, Rampart, Castle

Tower has Titans, Nagas, and a Golem wall that does not care about morale the way living stacks do. It wants gold and crystals and time. If the map is a rush, Tower looks slow. If the map is an XL, Titans look like the win condition. Alchemists and Wizards are some of the best spell carriers in the game.

Rampart is the Diplomacy town in a lot of drafts: elven shooters, Unicorns, and Gold Dragons, plus a hero pool that likes extra terrain movement. Forests are home. Open desert is a worse life. When the generator is kind, Rampart’s mid-game is as strong as anyone’s.

Castle is the reference army: Archers, Griffins, Cavaliers, Angels. It teaches the game. It rarely has a broken engine like skeletons or black dragons, and it rarely has a hopeless week. Paladins and Clerics are honest. If your lobby first-picks the S-tier towns, Castle is the remaining pick that does not require an apology.

B — Inferno

Inferno explodes when Pit Lords start turning corpses into demons and when Devils hit the field. Efreeti are annoying flyers. The town’s resource hunger and the “everything is on fire and also slightly fragile” creature line keep it out of S for most players. In the hands of someone who knows when to take fights, it is a night-ruiner. In the hands of a beginner who built the wrong unique, it is a lesson.

C — Stronghold, Fortress

Stronghold has Behemoths, Cyclopes, and a Goblin-to-Orc core that wants Attack specialties. It is straightforward and slightly under-tooled against magic towns. A great Stronghold player is a menace on maps with early Orc stacks. A new Stronghold player wonders why Angels keep showing up.

Fortress is the swamp town: Gnolls, Lizardmen, Dragon Flies, Wyverns, Hydras. Hydras are magnificent. The rest of the tree asks you to win with mid-tier grit and Basilisk gazes while other towns grow dragons. On swamp-heavy templates Fortress is a different game. On standard grass it is the town you pick to prove a point. Beastmasters can still steal a lobby if the hydra stack is real and the enemy brought no Dispel plan.

How to use this list in 2027

If Ubisoft has not changed dwellings, this order still holds on launch night. If they have, start with whatever patch notes mention Conflux Phoenixes, Necromancy percentages, and Black Dragon immunities. Those three numbers move worlds.

For creature-level arguments, continue to the creature tier list. For the skill wheel that makes these towns actually work, use the hero tier list. New commanders should still begin with getting started rather than first-picking Dungeon into a map they cannot yet read.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for new commanders and returning veterans.

Why is Castle not S-tier if it has Angels?

Angels are elite. Castle's engine is still "pay gold, grow honestly." Necropolis and Dungeon generate extra power the bank did not invoice.

Should I ban towns in a casual lobby?

Only if someone in the group always first-picks Dungeon. Random towns is the kinder house rule. See multiplayer.

Is Conflux in the remake?

Yes. All nine factions, including the Armageddon's Blade town, are day-one content.
